No Rubbernecking!

The Christian Life is like driving in a long distance, high speed race: a single moment of looking at anything that is not pertinent to the race can result in our wrecked life, or worse yet, we could cause the wreck of another person’s life.

Rubbernecking is where we gawk at eye candy (exciting to the eyes and thus to the heart) in the middle of the high speed race, resulting in our distraction and the endangerment of our spirit-life and that of others. On a public freeway when traffic slows to just 15 mph because of an accident in one lane, there are drivers who rubberneck (gawk) at the accident like its eye candy, are distracted for just a split second and wreck their own car’s bumper or side panels. If that can happen at 15 mph, imagine the mess that can be made at 180 mph with not just car parts, but body and soul parts! So it is in the spiritual aspect of the high speed race: the Christian Life.

“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.”

~ Proverbs 4:25

Gentlemen, we would be wise not to gawk (or even glimpse) with lustful intent at life’s exotic cars, erotic women, or erratic business opportunities. Each of those things do not pertain to life and godliness, they do not serve the purpose of safely navigating life’s high speed spiritual race. They are momentary distractions that can have dire, eternal outcomes.

“… train yourself to be godly… godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

~ 1 Timothy 4:7-8

Ladies… I’ll leave it to you to provide your own examples, no doubt you have your own list of “eye candies” that try to distract you, whether they involve your physical eyes or not.

Using the long distance high speed race analogy, please allow me to weave it together with a passage of scripture that really sums up our devotional. I will quote the scripture and insert (“Like This!”) words that are from the high speed race analogy.

“… since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses (“Grandstands!”), let us throw off everything that hinders (“Rubbernecking!”) and the sin (“Eye Candy!”) that so easily entangles (“Distracts!”). And let us run (“Drive!”) with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus (“Watching the Car in front of Us!”)…”

~ Hebrews 12:1-2

Let’s remember, as Christians we are to be “professional race car drivers” and we do not “rubberneck” in life’s high speed race!
