In the Old Testament, God gave to Moses the designs for creating and using the Tabernacle (the dwelling place for God among the people, a portable structure that would move with the Israelites when they were led to change locations in their desert wandering years). Many years later God gave to King David the designs for building and using the Temple (the next dwelling place for God among the people, a permanent stone structure in Jerusalem).
When David was nearing the end of his life, he passed on the plans for the temple to his son, Solomon:
“Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple… the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for… the temple of the Lord…
‘All this,’ David said, ‘I have in writing as a result of the Lord’s hand on me, and He enabled me to understand all the details of the plan.'”
~ 1 Chronicles 28:11-12,19
Today, in the New Testament era, rather than having a single dwelling place in the form of a structure, God’s Spirit now dwells (1) in the church body as a whole, and (2) in believers individually.
“Don’t you know that you (Gk: plural) yourselves are God’s temple (Gk: singular) and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”
~ 1 Corinthians 3:16
“Do you not know that your (Gk: singular) bodies are temples (Gk: plural) of the Holy Spirit…”
~ 1 Corinthians 6:19
Fellow church leaders, through the scriptures we have been provided the blueprints for the foundation and framing of our church ministries. The details and deeper understanding of God’s specific plans for our specific mission in His Kingdom are then provided by the Holy Spirit, just as the Spirit did with King David. We read this earlier: “… the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind… ‘and He enabled me to understand all the details of the plan.'”
God still inspires detailed designs for the building and use of His dwelling places: people! From evangelism to repentance, from salvation to discipleship, from elementary to maturity, God has specific designs available for His leaders to implement in both the building and the use of His dwelling places.
Let’s approach the Lord our God in prayer, asking Him to provide for us insight and understanding of His detailed plans for the arena in which we serve in His Kingdom. In anticipation of hearing from Him, let’s bring a notebook into our prayer times so we also can say what David said: “I have in writing as a result of the Lord’s hand being on me.”
