Are you a Control Freak or Servant-Hearted?
There is a distinct difference between a Servant-Hearted person and a Control Freak.
The Servant-Hearted is motivated by love and a sincere desire to help and bless the people within their sphere of influence. The Control Freak is motivated by a deep desire to serve their own needs and wants, and to exert their control over situations and people within their sphere of influence by being manipulative.
The “total” Control Freak is a selfish power monger, and their conscience bears witness to them of their manipulative actions. To appease the voice of their guilty conscience, the Control Freak will tell themselves and others that they aren’t a Control Freak, but just a Highly Motivated Servant-Hearted person.
However, when a Control Freak is diverted from their “service to others,” quite often their reaction will betray their true motivation and the condition of their own heart. Their reaction is completely different from that of a Servant-Hearted individual.
A “mature” Control Freak is one who [through repeatedly telling themselves that they need not change because they are truly Servant-Hearted] has dangerously seared the part of their conscience that helps a person discern the true motives behind their “service” to others. This condition is dangerous, as a small seared area in the conscience grows and metastasizes like a cancer, affecting the person as a whole.
“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them… because you are willing, as God wants you to be… eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”
( 1 Peter 5:2-3 )
